5 Days in Banaras: A Calm, Spiritual Journey Through India's Holiest City

From the moment we set foot in Banaras, we knew we were entering a place unlike any other. With three elderly couples travelling with us, we sought a journey of spirituality and timeless traditions. Banaras, with its holy ghats, ancient temples, and quiet charm, offered just what we wanted. Over five days, we embraced the city's spiritual essence at a gentle pace, connecting deeply with its sacred energy.
Day 1: Spiritual Awakening & Riverside Calm
We began our journey at Dashashwamedh Ghat, witnessing the peaceful Ganga Aarti at dawn. The soft glow of fire and the sounds of prayers created a serene atmosphere unlike anything we'd experienced before. As the first rays of sunlight danced across the holy river, we felt a profound connection to this ancient city.
We then enjoyed a gentle boat ride along the Ganga ghats, soaking in the views of multiple temples standing tall along the riverbank. Passing Assi Ghat, we admired its vibrant atmosphere, where locals gather for morning prayers and quiet reflection. The rhythmic splashing of oars in water provided a meditative soundtrack to our journey.
For lunch, we savored the comfort of traditional kachoris and refreshing lassi, followed by the famous Banarasi Paan that left a sweet lingering taste—our first authentic experience of Banaras' culinary delights.
In the afternoon, we visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of Hinduism's most sacred sites. Its divine energy was palpable, and we took our time exploring the peaceful surroundings, allowing the elderly members of our group to move at their own pace. For dinner, we enjoyed a traditional vegetarian thali at the famous Kesariya Thal restaurant, filled with a variety of local dishes offered with the distinctive flavors of Banaras.

We started our second day with a visit to the Durga Temple located at Belupur, known for its peaceful ambience. The morning pooja was a beautiful way to connect with the spirituality of the place, the air heavy with incense and devotion. The temple's red-painted structure stood in striking contrast against the morning sky.
Later, we explored the narrow alleys of the old city, where time seems to stand still. Each turn revealed something new—artisans working on silk looms, small shrines nestled between ancient buildings, and the aroma of street food filling the air. We browsed local crafts and the famous Banarasi silk sarees, marveling at the intricate craftsmanship passed down through generations.
As the day progressed, we visited Manikarnika Ghat, one of the oldest and most sacred cremation grounds. The energy around this ghat was very powerful and peaceful, despite its association with cremation. It offered our group a profound moment of reflection on life's impermanence and the spiritual significance of this holy city.
Day 3: Culture, Art, and Calm Exploration
We dedicated our third day to exploring the intellectual heart of Banaras at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). We wandered through the BHU Museum and the sprawling campus grounds, where ancient knowledge meets modern education. The atmosphere was full of intellectual conversations, and we also visited the library—a special treat since one of the elderly couples in our group included a Hindi literature professor.
In the afternoon, we made our way to Ramnagar Fort, where we admired the panoramic views of the river and learned about the city's royal history. The weathered sandstone walls told stories of a bygone era, while the museum inside displayed an impressive collection of vintage cars, royal palanquins, and ornate weapons.
We chose to end the day with a repeat visit to Assi Ghat, taking the evening slow to enjoy the peaceful riverside sunset. As the sky painted itself in hues of orange and pink, we sat in quiet contemplation, listening to the distant temple bells and watching as lamps floated down the sacred river.
Banaras invites you to slow down, reflect, and connect with the timeless spirituality that fills the city.
Day 4: Sarnath & Vindhyachal - A Spiritual Escape
On our fourth day, we ventured beyond the city to Sarnath, about a 30-minute drive from Banaras, where Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The peaceful gardens and ancient stupas provided a calm setting for reflection. Walking through this sacred site, with its meticulously maintained grounds and profound historical significance, allowed us to connect deeply with Buddhism's origins.
Later, we traveled to Vindhyachal, a serene temple town located about an hour's drive from Banaras. Surrounded by natural beauty and dedicated to Goddess Vindhyavasini, this pilgrimage site offered a different kind of spiritual energy—one connected to the power of the divine feminine and the majestic Vindhya mountain range.
After returning to Banaras in the evening, we enjoyed a simple meal of local dishes like Baati Chokha and Tamatar Chaat, rounding off the day with flavors that felt just like home. Though it seemed like we covered less ground today, the slower pace allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the peace and spiritual essence of these sacred places.

We devoted our final day to immersing ourselves in the vibrant charm of Gyanvapi Bazaar, one of Banaras' most famous markets. Here, we browsed through rows of Banarasi sarees, handwoven textiles, and antique jewelry—especially bangles—each item carrying the spirit of the city. It was a perfect way to pick up souvenirs and take a piece of Banaras home with us.
For lunch, we indulged in tangy and spicy treats at the famous Kashi Chaat Bhandar, savoring their renowned pani puri and dahi puri. The explosion of flavors—sweet, tangy, spicy—perfectly embodied the complexity and richness of Banaras itself.
We then made a quick visit to Vishwanath Gali, with its multiple stores perfect for street shopping. The entire lane carried the fragrance of the nearby temple and was filled with spiritual energy, creating a shopping experience unlike any other.
Banaras offers peace, reflection, and a deep connection. It's a city that stays with you long after you leave.
Farewell to the Eternal City
As the day drew to a close, we headed to Satkar Restaurant, located in Lanka, one of the most vibrant and busy streets of Banaras, for our farewell dinner. Known for its delicious local food and casual ambience, we enjoyed simple and comforting dishes like paneer bhurji, daal, and roti—a not-too-heavy end to our spiritual journey.
Looking back at our five days in this ancient city, we realized that Banaras isn't just a destination—it's a place for spiritual awakening and profound connection. For our group, this gentle-paced journey provided an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and connect with something sacred and timeless.
As our flight departed the next morning, we carried with us not just souvenirs, but transformed spirits. Banaras will forever remain a place that calls us back whenever we seek serenity and spiritual renewal.
